The Honor Magic 4 Pro is the company’s latest high-end smartphone. It has a 6.39-inch LTPO OLED display, Qualcomm SM8450 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset, 12GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage. The phone also has a quad-camera setup on the back with a 50MP main sensor.
The Honor Magic 4 Pro runs Android 12 and Magic UI 6. It features an under display fingerprint scanner and USB Type-C port. There’s also a 4,600mAh battery with 100% Fast charging in 30 minutes. There is a drawback though, the Honor Magic 4 Pro doesn’t have a headphone jack.
With that said, let’s take a closer look at the Honor Magic 4 Pro and see what it has to offer.
Design and display
The Honor Magic 4 Pro has a premium design made of glass that’s curved around the front and back of the phone, as well as a metal frame. The phone is also quite slim at just 9.1mm thick. It’s available in five colours – black, white, cyan, orange, gold.
On the front, the Honor Magic 4 Pro has a 6.81-inch LTPO OLED display with Full HD+ resolution and 19:5:9 aspect ratio. Plus, it supports HDR10+ for even better colour reproduction.
Camera
The Magic 4 Pro’s wide and ultra-wide cameras are both 50MP, but they aren’t all created equal. While the primary 50MP camera has an f/1.8, 23mm lens and a tiny 1/1.56″ sensor with 1.0µm pixels, the ultra-wide camera’s 50MP sensor is significantly smaller at only 1/2.5″. It does have a broad 122-degree field of view, although it will unlikely compete against the Oppo Find X3 Pro’s ultra-wide IMX 766 camera.
With a telephoto periscope camera that has the same focal length and resolution as its 90mm focal length with an f/3.5 aperture for roughly a three and a half times zoom equivalent, the Honor Magic 4 Pro’s range is comparable to any other smartphone at this price range. There’s also a ToF sensor on the rear and front of the device, as well as a 12MP ultra-wide selfie camera. The zoom range appears to be broad, but it won’t outperform the current best.
Features
The Honor Magic 4 Pro has some interesting features like the ability to use hand gestures to control certain aspects of the phone. You can also use it to quickly unlock the device without using your fingerprint. There’s also a built-in AI assistant that can be used to perform tasks like setting alarms and sending text messages.
Price and availability
The Honor Magic 4 Pro is available from S$ 1,300 to S$ 1,400. There’s news that it would be released this coming April 2022.
Final thoughts
The Honor Magic 4 Pro is a solid high-end smartphone with a great design, powerful specs, and interesting features. However, its lack of a headphone jack is really disappointing.
The Honor Magic 4 Pro checks all the boxes you would want in your next phone. With access to Google Play Store, a top-tier spec roster including premium design and smart camera set up for versatility’s sake this should be an easy decision. The only concern we have at present is how well OIS will work on main cameras when tackling difficult scenes but hopefully software can make up for anything lacking with its capabilities.
Will it be the finest camera phone of 2022? It’s impossible to say right now, especially considering Samsung has outdone its periscope lineup with the S22 Ultra, Oppo has surpassed its ultra-wide camera and Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra overshadowing its primary sensor in terms of specs. We’re optimistic it will come together to make a decent, if not spectacular smartphone based on our first look.
With a variety of smartphone cameras emerging as the industry leader, it is too early to say whether or not this Honor Magic 4 Pro will be among them. However from what we have seen so far in our short time with Samsung’s S22 Ultra camera phone and their periscope range beyond ultra-wide-angle lenses for outdoor shots, alongside Xiaomi’s Mi 11 Ultra which has an extra sensor on top taking more overhead perspective views at once–we’re optimistic about its capabilities within packages being good if not great.
